It is a work that embodies much of what we preserve and continue in our tradition, and this seems a fitting moment to reflect on why it matters.<br>Lewandowski composed this setting of Tavo Lefanecha for a text that appears throughout the High Holiday services, and in his hands it becomes something remarkable. Where a lesser composer might have bent the liturgy toward display or sentiment, Lewandowski found a musical language that serves the prayer itself. The piece has an architectural integrity\u2014it builds and recedes, finds its emotional weight without overstating it, and above all, remains transparent to the Hebrew words it carries. That restraint is not minimalism; it is the clarity of genuine craftsmanship.<br>What strikes me and what I have come to appreciate more deeply in my years here at Belsize, is how the piece functions across different moments in the service and elevates the listeners into a moment of sincere prayer. It appears in various contexts\u2014each appearance revealing a different facet of Lewandowski\u2019s compositional thinking. The same musical material, heard afresh in different liturgical moments, deepens its resonance rather than diminishing it through repetition. That kind of resourcefulness is characteristic of the Western European cantorial school that Sulzer and Lewandowski exemplified.<br>There is also something about Tavo Lefanecha that speaks to the particular role Belsize holds. We are custodians of a repertoire that might otherwise be forgotten. The broader Jewish world has moved in many directions musically\u2014some toward contemporary Eastern European Cantorial sentimental composition, new age, happy clappy, sometimes some toward other traditions entirely. There is nothing wrong with that if it achieves the purpose of engaging the congregation. But the continuity of the Sulzer-Lewandowski line, the specific musical language they developed for Liberale Judaism in Central and Western Europe, requires active preservation and living practice. It cannot survive as archive alone. It survives only when cantors, choristers, organ and congregants encounter it in actual worship, when its beauty becomes part of the rhythm of their own spiritual year.<br>Lewandowski wrote for a congregation not entirely unlike ours\u2014educated, thoughtful, rooted in both Jewish tradition and European musical culture. He took seriously the task of creating liturgical music that respected both the texts and the intelligence of those who would sing and hear it. Tavo Lefanecha is one of his answers to that challenge.<br>In the weeks ahead, as this piece moves through our services, I find myself grateful for it in a way that goes beyond musical appreciation. It is a tangible thread connecting us to a moment when Jewish communities in Europe worked out, with considerable skill and seriousness, how to hold tradition and modernity in the same musical and spiritual breath. That work is not finished. It continues here, in this community, through the choices we make about which music we sustain and why.<br>Tavo Lefanecha will be heard at Belsize during the High Holiday services.
