In the nineteenth century, synagogues across Europe faced a contentious question: should an organ be part of the liturgy? For many, the answer was no. The organ seemed to belong to the Christian church, not to Jewish worship. It was seen as a symbol of assimilation, a departure from tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Louis Lewandowski saw it differently. He was convinced that the organ, far from being a corruption of Jewish practice, was essential to something he believed in deeply: communal singing. And his conviction shaped not just his thinking about instruments, but his entire approach to composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lewandowski lived in a time of transition. Jews in Central and Western Europe were engaging with secular culture, with European musical traditions. Lewandowski did not retreat from this reality. Instead, he asked: how do we create music that serves the synagogue, that respects the prayer, and that invites the entire community to participate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was the point of the organ. In his view, congregants needed support. They needed the harmonic foundation that an organ provided. They needed a musical partner that would help them find their voices and sustain them through the service. The alternative was to leave singing to the cantor alone, to relegate the community to passive listening. That was not what Lewandowski wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This conviction runs through his liturgical works. The settings he wrote for cantor, chorus, and organ are structured to include the community. They are not vehicles for virtuosity or display. They are invitations to participate. When you sing Psalm 92 at Friday night services, when you join your voice to Tavo Lefanecha during the High Holidays, you are singing music composed with you in mind. Lewandowski believed your voice mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The controversy around the organ was not really about the instrument itself. It was about what kind of worship Lewandowski was advocating for: one that was democratic, participatory, rooted in the shared voice of the community rather than the solitary gift of the cantor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is why his music endures. It is music that still trusts congregants. It still invites them to sing. It still provides the harmonic and structural support needed to make that possible. In that sense, every time a community sings Lewandowski, they are affirming his conviction that liturgical music belongs to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
